Frequently Asked Questions

Q. At what age can my child start lessons at the TRP Academy?

A. 3 years of age.

The Tae Ryong Park Academy offers programs for children as young as three years of age. Our World Class Team of Black Belt Instructors understand that each child has individual learning differences, therefore our teaching methods are sensitively tailored to each students’ age and skill level. Most children, even at the age of three, do very well in our “Little Tigers Program”.

Q. When can my child start classes?

A. At any time.

The TRP Academy offers on-going registrations throughout the year so you may start your child at any time. Our Likewise, we have open registration for all of our teen and adult programs as well. The Tae Ryong Park Academy typically starts a new children’s beginners class every September for our Little Tigers (ages 3-6 years) and Junior Tigers (ages 7-12 years) Programs.

Q. What do you do during a typical children’s class?

A. There are no typical classes at the TRP Academy.

From the first moment the children arrive at the Academy to the time that they leave, they are taught proper respect and manners. We work with the children to ensure that what they are being taught by their parents at home regarding respect, discipline and manners is being re-enforced here at the Academy. Of course, there are additional rules and martial arts etiquette which the students are required to demonstrate here at the Academy, but all this is done in a positive and a fun and “cool” way so that they will want to learn and follow by these rules. The children have fun each and every class developing their martial arts skills during their exciting and fast paced classes. Every class is a little different so that the children are having fun and are being challenged. Of course while having fun, they are keeping fit, learning, achieving goals and learning self defence.

Q. Will learning martial arts teach my child to become aggressive and fight?

A. No.

Unfortunately there are some school out there that do not teach their students properly so we cannot speak for all of the martial arts schools, but at the TRP Academy, we teach our students to never misuse taekwondo. Because the students are taught to respect what they have learned, respect themselves and to respect others, they will not use their skills to fight. In fact, by learning proper martial arts they are taught how not to fight. With development of Respect and Confidence in the ability to defend themselves, they are more likely to walk away from a situation than feel a need to fight. Of course the skills that they will develop will be valuable in helping to defend themselves if needed.

Q. Do you offer flexibility in changing our class schedule?

A. Yes.

The staff at the Tae Ryong Park Academy understands that life sometimes gets busy. When you initially start classes you will be asked to choose your classes which will work best for you at that time and we expect that all of our students adhere to their chosen schedule so that we can manage our class sizes. However, during your time with us if you ever run into any scheduling conflicts, please let us know and we will do our best to assist in accommodating your schedule. In most cases, it is never a problem and always our pleasure to do so.
